Markets shows a heatmap of the roughly 500 largest US companies, grouped by sector. On the computer, pick Heatmap at the top of Markets (beside AI read); on the phone it sits under the sectors. It is a picture of the day’s market, not a list of picks: every company is there whether it moved or not.
Reading it
- Size is the company’s market cap, so the biggest companies take the most room. A sector’s block is the sum of its companies.
- Colour is today’s change: green up, red down, grey within 0.1% of flat. The deeper the colour, the bigger the move, up to 3% (anything past 3% is the deepest shade). The scale is printed under the map.
- The figure beside each sector’s name is the sector’s move, weighted by market cap.
- Small tiles show no text rather than a cut-off ticker. Point at one to read it.
A company’s figures
Hover a tile (or tap it on the phone) for its name, industry, price, today’s change and market cap. With the keyboard, focus the map and use the arrow keys. Click a tile, press Enter, or tap Open charton the phone to open that company on the chart.
When it updates
- While the market is open the map refreshes about every 90 seconds. Prices may be delayed.
- Outside market hours it shows the change at the last regular close, and says so under the map.
- It shows the latest session only. When you step back to an earlier day on Markets, the heatmap is hidden, because it has no history.
- The list of companies is refreshed once a day. A company that joins or leaves the large caps appears or disappears within a day.
