On a stock's chart, a small E badge along the foot of the price area marks each earnings report, going back about five years. The next report sits past the last candle, in the empty space on the right.
What the colours mean
- Green: reported earnings per share (EPS) came in above the estimate.
- Red: reported EPS came in below the estimate.
- Grey: it matched, or the figures aren't available.
- Violet: the next report, not out yet.
Hover over a badge to see the date, whether it fell before the open or after the close, and the estimate, the reported figure and the surprise. Recent reports and the next one also show revenue and, where the same quarter a year earlier is known, the change year over year. On the phone, tap the badge.
Things to know
- Badges show for stocks only. An ETF has no earnings, and crypto, forex and futures aren't companies.
- The next date is an expected date until the company confirms it, so it can move.
- Revenue goes back about five quarters, so older reports show earnings only. Past reports show no revenue surprise.
- To see the older badges on a daily chart, scroll back, or pick 5Y on the bar under the chart.
- A backtest replay hides them, so a later date can't give the future away.
- To turn them off, open Chart settings (the sliders button) and switch off Earnings dates under Canvas.
