US stocks and ETFs trade before the regular session (pre-market, 4:00–9:30 ET) and after it (after hours, 16:00–20:00 ET). Outside regular hours, the live prices in the app are those extended-hours trades, and the app tells you so.
The tags
- PRE (amber): the price is a pre-market trade. The change is measured from the last regular close.
- AH (amber): the price is an after-hours trade, measured from today's regular close.
- A grey PRE or AH means there has been no trade in that session yet, so you are seeing the last regular close.
- The top bar shows Pre-market, After hours or Market closed whenever the US stock market is outside its regular session. On the phone app the header shows PRE or AH.
Open P&L moves before the open
Open positions in stocks are valued at the price on screen, so their unrealized P&L follows pre-market and after-hours trading. Extended-hours trading is thinner than the regular session, so these prices can jump more and can differ from where the stock opens.
What has extended hours here
Only stocks and ETFs are tagged. Futures, forex and crypto trade almost around the clock, so their prices are always live and never tagged. An option has no pre-market, so between sessions it shows its last price.
Holidays
On a market holiday the top bar says Market closed all day, and stock prices are the last close.
