When a company splits its shares, say 3 for 1, the price divides by three overnight. A chart that kept the old prices would show a cliff on the split day. Every chart here shows split-adjusted prices: the candles before the split are divided by the same ratio, so the chart reads as one series. This happens on every chart and every timeframe, whether or not you do anything.
The S badge
Every split is a round S badge at the foot of the chart, beside the earnings badges. Hover it (tap it on the phone) to see the date and the ratio. A split that is announced but has not happened yet sits out past the last candle, like the next earnings date. Turn the badges off in Chart settings → Events → Splits.
The split notice
For 30 days after a split, the first time you open that symbol on the chart you see a notice saying when it happened and the ratio.
- If you have drawings on that symbol, choose Adjust drawings to divide their prices by the same ratio, so they line up with the candles again. Cancel leaves them where they are.
- A drawing is only ever adjusted once for a split, even if you answer the notice again on another device.
- Changed your mind? Undo on the chart puts the drawings back, and saves that too.
Things to know
- The notice is remembered in this browser, so another browser or device asks once more.
- Your trades are never changed: a trade keeps the prices you traded at.
- Only stocks and funds split. Crypto, forex, futures and options are never adjusted.
